What to Take on A Caravan Holiday

A caravan holiday is like no other. Some might even say it brings a sense of freedom you don’t get with other holidays. The final destination can be near or far, you can move from place to place as you please, and you aren’t tied to the constraints a hotel or holiday park may have.
Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? The ideal getaway, perhaps. In fact, the only thing you need to worry about is what to take. Now, we aren’t talking about what clothes to pack. Nor are we thinking about whether you need spending money. We are talking about the essentials that ensure your trip runs without a hitch.
Remember, your caravan is your home for the time you are staying in it; room service isn’t provided, there are no bar staff to pour your drinks, and no waiters to bring you your food. You’ll be doing it all by yourself (unless you go out, of course!), so you’ll need to stock up sufficiently for everyone to have a great, stress-free time away.
What you need to take on a caravan holiday will vary depending on whether you are using your own caravan or renting one at a park. Caravans on holiday camps are often fully stocked with a host of items, you’ll just need to bring clothes, food, drink and toiletries. However, if you plan to use your caravan, you’ll be packing all of those items, plus cookware, utensils and more. In this blog, we’ll run through everything you may need.
What to bring on a caravan holiday
In this guide, we are assuming you are using your caravan rather than a rented one. We’ll break it down by sections so you can treat it like a checklist and be fully prepared for your caravan adventure.
For the kitchen
On occasion, you may venture out for a meal, but there will be plenty of times when you take advantage of “eating in being the new eating out.” This means you’ll need to be stocked up with a variety of items that help keep your kitchen functioning.
- Bin bags (you’ll be surprised how much rubbish accumulates!)
- Washing up items such as scourers, sponges and washing up liquid.
- Cleaning products for work surfaces
- Oven gloves
- Plates
- Cutlery
- Pans, pots, etc
- Utensils such as ladles, knives, spoons, whisks
- Toaster
- Kettle
- Microwave
- Oven gloves
- Foil, clingfilm and kitchen roll
- Tea, coffee, squash
- Salt, pepper, vinegar, ketchup
- Snacks
In terms of the food itself, you’ll need to shop based on the available storage levels. It would be unwise to do a big shop on your first day and then find that the freezer compartment is too small or the fridge can’t hold everything you need it to.
For the bathroom
There is every chance you are hitting the beach, a pool or diving into some high-octane activity. You won’t have the luxury of the hotel amenities to keep you fresh and clean, nor will you be topped up with complimentary bottles of shower gel, so you’ll have to go it alone. Ensure your bathroom always has the following available:
- Hand soap
- Toilet roll
- Towels (hand towels and full-length)
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Shower gel
- Sun cream
- Face wash
- First aid kit (although this can be stored elsewhere)
Clothing
It would be wrong for us to provide a comprehensive list of all the clothing you should pack. Much comes down to personal taste as well as the type of location you are visiting. However, there are some core items you should pack into the wardrobes and drawers so you are ready for the activities, the weather and whatever else may come your way.
- Underwear
- T-shirts/polos
- Jumpers/hoodies
- Shorts
- Jeans/trousers
- Pyjamas or other nightwear
- Waterproofs
- Light jacket
- Warm coat
- Hat (summer or winter style, depending on when you go!)
- Swimwear
- Outdoor clothes (for those activities where you may get dirty, wet or smelly!)
- Smart clothes (for those nights out where you dress to impress)
- Trainers
- Shoes
- Slippers
- Wellies
At the beach or pool
We’ve already mentioned the need for swimwear, but if you plan to enjoy the water during your holiday, don’t forget these items either!
- Armbands
- Goggles
- Inflatables
- Beach chairs
- Umbrella
- Cool box (filled up with snacks, drinks and maybe a bottle of wine!)
- A bag for wet clothing
- Picnic mat or similar
- Beach toys (buckets and spades, etc.)
- Towels
For in the caravan
If the weather is against you, and heading out is not on the cards, your caravan becomes your entertainment hub. Even if the sun is shining, you might make your caravan your base for the day as you relax and let the world pass you by. Either way, make sure you are sufficiently prepared:
- Chargers for phones and tablets
- Power banks
- Board games
- Toys
- DVDs, books
- Games console
- Mobile phone
- All the correct leads and cables
- TV (If you haven’t already put one in!)
- Speakers
For the pets
On some holidays, your pets may well join you! Don’t forget they want to have just as much enjoyment as you, so make sure you can give them that opportunity!
- Toys
- Food (meals and treats!)
- Pet bed
- Towels
- Bowls for food and water
- Leads and harnesses
- Poo bags
For the outdoor fun
Part of the fun of caravanning is that you can end up pretty much anywhere, and this can lead to a host of exciting adventures. Some might be a little dangerous, others may be a little tame; either way, you’ll want to be prepared for what they have to offer. Remember the following so nothing takes you by surprise:
- Sportswear
- Walking shoes
- Bike/Scooter
- Ball games
- Suitable clothing (ideally something that you don’t mind getting dirty!)
- First aid equipment
- Waterproofs
- Correct equipment for activities you know you’ll do (golf clubs, fishing rods, life jackets, etc.)
Of course, all of these lists could go on and on. Much depends on what you want from your time away. Ideally, you want to be prepared so every aspect of your trip can remain enjoyable.
